In 2010, Arthur—a Los Angeles therapist with a Jungian background—decides to look through an old family trunk. He vaguely remembers investigating it as a boy in his childhood home near Paradise, California.  Art (as his friends call him) inherited the trunk at age 40, when his father died.  It has sat, unopened, in his L.A. home for ten years.  Now, at 50 and at a turning point in life, he’s moved to explore the contents of the trunk.

Within, Art discovers a trove of pictures.  Some are commercial graphics of the mid-20th century—travel posters, movie lobby cards, other popular culture ephemera; he finds antique hand-made collages built around fairy tales and saints’ legends.  There are icons and old photographs and postage stamps, ads for old-time radio shows, and illustrated song sheets, even a couple of quilts. This remarkable stash of visual material dates from the turn of the last century, when his Orthodox great-grandparents left Russia for China, and finally made their way to northern California.

Everything in the trunk is jumbled together, but Art senses connecting threads in the images, and wonders how they might relate to his own life story.  He’s looking at his family’s psychospiritual history; his ancestors’ picture-collecting habits created this legacy for him.  As Art sorts the contents of the trunk into themes, he realizes he’s immersed in archetypes that speak to his life, today.  With the help of a wise spiritual companion—their sessions, a Sandplay series, and Art’s journal pages all included—Art becomes increasingly conscious of his heart’s deepest desire: a longing for the holy.  He tells his story in this hand-crafted book, filled with reproductions of pictures from the old trunk...and is already gathering more pictures for a sequel: The Picture Tenders.

I have never read anything quite like Arthur Ross' work--it is spiritual autobiography, family history, an overview of Jungian practice, and--most of all--a beautiful picture book (worth a whole color cartridge when printed out). Thank you, Art--you give me ideas about how to gather the pieces of my own life.
